CO <sub>2</sub> Aggregation on Monoethanolamine: Observations from Rotational Spectroscopy

The initial stages of the gas-phase nucleation between CO2 and monoethanolamine were investigated via broadband rotational spectroscopy with aid extensive theoretical structure sampling. Sub-nanometer-scale aggregation patterns monoethanolamine-(CO2)n, n=1–4, identified. An interesting competition intramolecular hydrogen bond intermolecular interactions upon cluster growth was discovered, revealing an intriguing binding priority to hydroxyl group over amine group. These findings are in sharp contrast general results for aqueous solutions. In quinary complex, a cap-like tetramer observed cooperatively surrounding monoethanolamine. As approaches critical size new particle formation, contribution self-assembly overall stability increases.
